Seeking Recommendations...

I'd like to read some good quality commercial crime novels, preferably set in New York. Doesn anyone have any recommendations? Nearest thing to that I read lately was Interpretation of Murder, which I enjoyed a lot, but it was set a century ago. Anybody have anything more up to date?

'lo Conduit, good to see you back! Enjoyed your post on NY and especially the photos. Sorry Van Halen were not 100% good; seems like everything else made up for it, though!

As for your question, I don't read much crime, so no clue. Over to the experts.

I always read murder mysteries set in the UK, so that's no help. You might want to read "The Hundredth Man" though, for a few reasons. It's a police procedural with some action, the author has got a great, solid voice, a decent plot arc as far as the crime goes (average for the hero's love-life, excellent for the rest of the personal life, so you can see how that looks) and he got a 500K advance (first novel). The writing in the opening scene is not to be missed. It's set in the South, but er, close enough for government work. :)

The Sins of the Fathers, by Lawrence Block.

Little Girl Lost, by Richard Aleas.

The Gutter and the Grave, by Ed McBain.

And, if you want some real twisted fun, try Bust and Slide, the first two installments of a trilogy by Ken Bruen and Jason Starr. Oh, and since my list is mostly a love-note to Hard Case Crime, I should also suggest The Confession, by Domenic Stansberry -- it's set on the west coast, but my God, it's one of the finest first-person narratives I've ever read.

Manhattan Nocturne: A Novel
by Colin Harrison

One I've read and highly recommed.

The Manhattan Hunt Club
by John Saul

On my TBR list. Looks good.

Thanks, folks. My Amazon clicking finger just got a workout. I might have accidentally ordered a Van Halen DVD while I was at it, but these things happen.
